Rusty Dog, Pickets & Tulips,
It used to be an entire dog made of rusted metal — a whimsical sculpture made of scraps and springs — which I bought for $10 at a yard sale. It’s barrel-body turned out to be collecting rainwater and was partly full of rusty water, which leaked in the back of the car!
After we put our rusty dog on the lawn, hoping it might startle the deer and keep them from eating everything, some people asked, “Is it a mouse? An elephant?” And the most common reaction to our comment, “No, it’s a dog!” was, “Really? I’m not seeing it!” So we ended up referring to it as our dog-mouse-elephant…
Over time, standing guard in the front yard, our “dog” continued to crumble. One morning a couple of weeks ago, we woke to find it collapsed on one side, its right-front leg rotted through irreparably. So we took its body to the recycling center in a bin, and in a moment of loony-whimsy, put its head on a corner post of a picket fence! LOL
Here’s a photo of our “dog” in the snow (from a previous post) when it was still (sort of) in one piece:
