The Haze Before the Heat.
It was morning on day two of a weekend heat wave that would break records. At Cove Island Park, it was low tide, which turned the tiny island into a peninsula, on which people were walking briefly before the tide rose again and cut off their escape.
The temperature had not yet started to climb to the predicted heights, but there was a heavy, humid haze hovering on the water. We could see people on the island clearly, but the haze completely obscured the normally-visible shoreline across the sound.
We walked quickly, sweating profusely in the hazy humidity and raced home to avoid the sweltering heat coming in the hours ahead…
