It was morning on day two of a weekend heat wave that would break records. At Cove Island Park, it was low tide, which turned the tiny island into a peninsula, on which people were walking briefly before the tide would rise again and cut off their escape.
The temperature had not yet started to climb to the predicted heights, but there was a heavy, humid haze hovering on the water. We could see people on the island clearly, but the haze completely obscured the normally-visible shoreline across the sound.
We walked quickly, sweating profusely in the hazy humidity and raced home to avoid the sweltering heat coming in the hours ahead…
