In the Act

In the act of speaking and hearing.

On my walk by the water, a saunter by the sound, at the edge of the estuary, I saw three counselors from a day camp talking. As I wondered what they were discussing, I was reminded of my late father’s poem entitled, “In the Act” which — for my children and me — is insightful and life-altering; especially the first verse. Here it is, with a link to the full poem on my father’s poetry blog:

In the act of speaking
and hearing you speak,
one of my selves moved off
and stood to watch.

— George Murray

To enhance and emphasize this third-person triptych-triality of human interaction — listening, speaking, observing — I made a dimensional edit of an otherwise bland, blasé photograph of the three camp counselors. I hope you enjoy and find something interesting in the words of this poem, or any of my late father’s work, as I do…
