Lorenzo’s Pizza

Joe’s Pizza in New Canaan opened in 1967.

A “few” years later, Joe’s son Lorenzo took over the business, keeping the original name. In the years that followed, Joe’s Pizza continued to flourish not only as a GREAT pizza place, but also as a vital part of New Canaan and surrounding communities. I live in Stamford, and trust me — it’s worth driving to New Canaan for amazing pizza — and other great food!

We’ve known Lorenzo as customers for a few years now, stopping by when we can for lunch on our way to other places. In early 2022, I took three instant photographs at Joe’s Pizza, including a portrait of Lorenzo (whom I mistakenly called “Joe”), using a FujiFilm 300 camera and Instax Wide film (previous post here).

Today, when we stopped by for slices, I brought my vintage Polaroid Big Shot camera loaded with expired, peel-apart, pack-film. Lorenzo agreed to pose again, this time in front of a faded photo of his father. We made a video of the “peeling pack-film” moment when we revealed the photo just 1-2 minutes later!

As we prepared to leave, we saw a mother, son, and daughter arrive, who headed to the back as if they owned the place. We assumed this was Lorenzo’s family, which he confirmed with a smile. Watching and listening to his children, we noticed how beautiful and bright they were, so I offered to take a portrait of them as well. The parents agreed, I snapped a Big Shot portrait, and we recorded the photo reveal with the children watching excitedly! (See the video clip on Instagram.) It was a wonderful cuteness overload for sure!
